In Biblical terms, the 1911 45ACP can be equated to Adam and the Browning High Power 9MM to Eve, and as such they are the spiritual forbears of all modern semi-automatic handguns. So the High Power's hiatus from the market was a tragically missing link in the history of handgun evolution but FN's announcement at SHOT this week was, for aficionados, akin to being teleported back to 1968 at the moment Jim Morrison strode on stage at the Hollywood Bowl. Not only have FN revived this icon of engineering but they've quietly updated it to reflect the mechanical and metallurgical lessons we've learned over the last century, and to meet the requirements of contemporary shooters. The picture above says it all. With over a million sold in it's first 80-year production, I'm predicting this new improved embodiment-of-legend will inspire enthusiastic sales to a whole new generation of shooters as well as all the men and women who pined for one in the years of it's absence. Springfield Armory's SA-35 could prove strong competition at half the price, especially if they can keep the gun stores stocked, but FN will hold the upper hand for purists and lovers of refinement. If you are a brand new gun owner and make a decent salary, you can stun your stall mates at the range by pulling this legend out of it's rug. Learn to shoot it well and tell them it's your only sidearm to further impress the hell out of them.
