NEW FIREARMS & ACCESSORIES

We make every attempt to only preview new products when they are actually available on the market. This spares consumers from wasting time trying to locate an item to buy when it hasn't yet left the prototype phase. Please note that during SHOT Show (January of each year) manufacturers often announce new items that are several months from stores: we still announce these despite not being immediately available for purchase.

BEST HOME DEFENSE GUN: THE SA REVOLVER

11/22/2018

Picture
Ruger Vaquero 45acp
Let's be honest, there haven't been any major (civilian legal) weapon developments since the invention of the cartridge bullet by Flobert in 1845. Sure, powders have changed, and there's a greater variety of projectiles, but the mechanism has remained fairly consistent since it's widespread adoption by US firearm manufacturers following the American Civil War. As too have the methods of firing them, i.e. by pistol, rifle or shotgun. Basically, a firing pin strikes a primer which ignites a propellant which discharges a projectile/s through a rifled of smooth bore barrel. Period.

A prominent CEO of a firearm manufacturing company recently told me he didn't feel anything truly new had been invented since the 2nd World War and every subsequent design was simply an adaptation on a pre-1945 design for commercial gain. I would have to agree. If that weren't the case then why would weapons like the 1911, pump-action shotgun and lever action rifle still hold such relevance and popularity today over 100 years after their invention? And the same can be said of almost every popular modern weapon: it's been done before. The innovations of early firearm designers often trump the achievements of today's engineers and what we as modern consumers see as new, invariably have their roots in some century-old design. Even striker-fired weapons (a system which most think was innovated by Glock) were originally developed by Borchardt (1893), Maxim (1896), Roth-Sauer (1900), Browning (1900), Mauser (1910) and Savage (1910) with Gaston Glock claiming inspiration from a Roth-Steyr system.

So, disparaging any cartridge-firing gun as antiquated or inadequate, is asinine. They all do the same thing with variations ONLY in speed of fire and ammunition capacity. And without question a handgun is more easily readied at short notice than a longarm, especially if you're sleeping in bed when a security situation arises. Hence my argument here, and the purpose of this article: the SA revolver (with modern transfer bar safety) is the best home defense weapon on the market. Why?

1) Absolute ammunition flexibility. You can use any ammo (of the designated caliber, of course) with 100% relaibility. For instance, a 22 revolver will shoot supersonic, standard and subsonic in LR, L and S ammo as well as buckshot and tracers. A 357mag/38spl will shoot any available bullet or powder grain count with equal regularity. A 44Mag will shoot 44Spl too and any combination of lead and powder. The 45 Long Colt is a formidable round and can be loaded much hotter than the 45acp. The Ruger New Vaquero in 45acp (pictured above) is a beauty and provides ammo interchangeability with the 1911. Semi automatic pistols are typically quite picky on ammo though of course top selling polymer pistols have gained popularity partly because they've engineered reliability into their design. Still, no semi-auto is as dependably reliable as a SA revolver no matter the make.

2) It can remain loaded indefinitely and still function perfectly when needed. Anyone who has ever taken a semi-auto pistol - that's been sitting in a nightstand for 3 months without cycling your mag - out to the range will know that magazine will often cause malfunction due to spring compression. So, if you forget to cycle your mags every two weeks your semi-auto could well malfunction after firing a round or two. I've seen it happen, it's happened to me and there's plenty of threads about this online if you don't believe me.

3) No accidental discharge if dropped. With the transfer bar safety system there is no danger of an accidental discharge if the revolver is dropped. So, unlike the old Colt clones, you can load the entire cylinder and keep the hammer down on a loaded chamber. A couple of years ago a fellow in a nearby town bought a Colt clone and had it loaded under his bed. When his mother came over that evening to see his brand new weapon, he retrieved it and carried it through to the living room to show her. Sadly he dropped it, it went off and shot him in the head. He died instantly. Get one with a transfer bar safety!

4) Accidentally squeeze the trigger in your sleep or while reholstering without fear of discharge. As long as the hammer isn't cocked back, if you hear a bump in the night you can clutch your weapon and safely fall back to sleep without fear of accidentally shooting yourself or your spouse if you have a nervous twitch or wake up with a start. You absolutely can't say that about any of the modern striker fired pistols (unless it has a manual safety, and it's engaged) or even a DA revolver. Without the hammer being cocked back, no single action revolver has ever fired no matter how hard anyone squeezed the trigger - this is why twirling gun tricks are only ever done with single action revolvers.

5) Old school cool, fun and easy to clean. I doubt there's any American handgun more iconic than a single action revolver and they are a blast to shoot. When you're done at the range simply pull the cylinder pin, remove and clean the cylinder and barrel, oil it up, reassemble and you're done. Further take down is uneccessary more than twice a year even with regular use. And if you ever want to see a SA revolver fired quickly and accurately, just watch some Cowboy Action Shooting on Youtube, wow!

So, who makes a single action revolver WITH transfer bar safety?

Ruger: probably the best known and best suited for hot modern loads, Ruger offers a wide range of SA revolvers from the tiny jewel-like Bearcat all the way up to the behemoth Super Blackhawk. Ruger sets the standard for customer service in the industry so if there an issue with your sidearm you'll have it fixed within ten days without any cost to yourself. www.ruger.com

Traditions Firearms: Traditions offers 1873 Single Action Revolvers made by Pietta in two series with a variety of choices. Both series also come equipped with a transfer bar system which provides the highest level of safety offered in an 1873 single action firearm. www.TraditionsFirearms.com

Heritage Arms Big Bore Revolver: best known for their famous Rough Rider 22LR/22Mag revolvers, Heritage also produce competitively priced 45Colt and 357Mag/38Spl single action revolvers with a transfer bar safety. www.Heritagemfg.com

Uberti Cattleman II Series: The Uberti Cattleman II with retractable firing pin is a breakthrough for those seeking enhanced safety with regard to original Old West revolvers without sacrificing the visual authenticity of a 1st-generation Colt. As any cowboy knows, the safest way to carry a single-action is with the hammer resting on an unloaded chamber. This is true even for the Uberti retractable firing pin design so it is not as safe as tranfer bar designs. But in the case of the Uberti design, the risk of accidental discharge is reduced: the firing pin is not locked into the firing position unless the trigger is pulled. www.Uberti-USA.com

As ever, just an opinion!

Introducing the KC9, the first model in the new Evolution series from Ed Brown. The KC9 pays homage to the Kobra Carry, which took the industry by storm nearly 20 years ago, and has now become the iconic standard for a high end custom 1911, with its revolutionary Ed Brown Bobtail®, stainless steel base, and Snakeskin treatment.

Optimized for the 9mm caliber, the KC9 inherits those same characteristics, yet is smaller, thinner, and lighter. The KC9 retains 100% 1911 controls and handling characteristics, and makes use of standard 1911 magazines, and standard 1911 grips with the Ed Brown Bobtail® cut, which are now a standard offering among major grip makers. Some parts were completely re-designed to take advantage of modern improvements such as the new external extractor, easy-to-change front sight, smaller ledge-style rear sight, bull barrel, and a flat wire recoil spring system. The re-engineered slide has been shortened to 4", thinned substantially for weight reduction, and includes a unique 7-top custom cut, with special front and rear serrations. A recessed slide stop completes the package, making for the perfect custom 9mm 1911.

Ruger AR-556 MPR in 450 Bushmaster

For anyone who's not familiar with the 450 Bushmaster, here'a comparison with the standard .223 round. Think of it as a 45-70 for the AR platform. You're not going to achieve the same MOA as with more streamlined projectiles but when you're making holes as big as dinner plates that probably doesn't matter so much. A formidable round in a proven platform built by Ruger, this is one to bucket list.
  • Lower receiver is fitted with Magpul® MOE® grip and MOE SL™ collapsible buttstock on the Mil-Spec buffer tube.
  • Handguard is free-floating for accuracy and the slim, 15" length provides enhanced ergonomics and support.
  • Made from aerospace-grade 7075-T6 aluminum forging, the flattop upper receiver includes a forward assist, dust cover and brass deflector, and is Type III hard coat anodized for maximum durability.
  • Bolt is machined, shot peened and pressure (proof) tested to ensure strength, structural integrity and durability.
  • The Ruger® Elite 452™ AR-Trigger is a two-stage trigger that offers a smooth, crisp, 4.5 pound trigger pull. It features a full-strength hammer spring for consistent primer ignition and a lightweight hammer that enables a 30% faster lock time over standard MSR triggers.
  • Magpul® M-LOK® accessory attachment slots along the 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 positions with additional slots on the angled faces near the muzzle.
  • Cold hammer-forged 4140 chrome-moly steel barrel with ultra-precise rifling provides exceptional accuracy, longevity and easy cleaning.
  • Chrome-plated bolt carrier inside diameter and chrome-plated gas key inside diameter provide exceptional resistance to hot gases. The gas key is staked so that it will not loosen after extensive firing. A matte black oxide finish on the exterior of the bolt carrier provides corrosion resistance.
  • Ruger® muzzle brake is a radial port design that significantly reduces felt recoil and muzzle movement. The threaded barrel allows for standard muzzle accessories to be installed.
  • Also includes: One Magazine

seeall refurbished sights for $65

Picture
SeeAll makes robust battery-less reflex sights for various weapon applications: here we have their non-tritium open sight for rifle or rail that normally sells for $100 but available refurbished for $65. Though they started with a very simple boxy looking sight some years ago they've subsequently streamlined their designs and modified them for various applications: besides the non-tritium sight pictured above they now have tritium low light sights, pistol sights and sights for crossbows and muzzleloaders. If you're fed up with your optic going dark, buying batteries, and your sight electronics being effected by recoil, take a serious look at SeeAll. This from their website:

All sights that have been returned, scratched, or other small blemishes are categorized as refurbished. All products are 100% functional, have been inspected, or rebuilt, and come in new packaging. Refurbished sights come with a Lifetime Warranty on parts, and workmanship, but are NOT offered with a 30 day money back. Very Limited Number of Units Available.

This Tritium sight is the result of years of R&D and extreme testing. Unlike other manufacturers, this sight isn't subject to temperature or humidity errors. With SeeAll sights you HIT THE TARGET... every time! Our patented system includes a rail adapter designed for easy and secure installation on any Picatinny or Weaver rail system.

Exciting Dual Illumination Integration:
Low to Full Light: Edge Glow Polycarbonate - This light gathering technology ensures full reticle visibility when shooting from low to full light conditions.
No to Minimal Light: Tritium Inlay - This patented setup allows for reticle visibility in even the darkest of nights without causing night blindness. No batteries required... ever. Our tritium is always the highest quality and outlasts the competition by as much as 4 to 5 times longer.

Constructed for Maximum Durability and Quality: 100% made in the USA. 6160 Aluminum body for both strength and corrosion resistance. High strength polycarbonate "guts" to prevent scratching and temperature warping. We build our products to last. One of our first tests for durability was to drop a mounted sight with pistol from 6' to hard concrete. The result - perfectly usable!

Unmatched Designed for Superior Performance: Lifetime Warranty: With multiple patents and a lifetime warranty on parts, accuracy and tritium, we stand behind our claims that this is the best tritium rifle sight on the market. Holds Zero: Our patented Micro-Adjust system with multiple hard spring placement ensures our pistol sights hold zero in every situation. True Clarity: The SeeAll no-gap construction method prevents hazing, fogging and scratching. This means you'll have a clear site picture every time and in every environment. No Parallax: Unlike other sights, where you see the reticle is where your round will hit. Regardless of your angle or eye position you'll hit where you aim.

fine Miniature Wooden Shotguns

Apart from these Browning and Beretta minis, he also makes an excellent mini Winchester Model 12 pump. These would make fun stocking stuffers for the dad who has everything or for the kid who wants a gun and isn't yet ready for a Daisy Red Ryder! This from his website on Etsy:

cz p-10 optics ready

11/3/2018

Picture
CZ is now positioned to undercut other optics-ready pistols on the market with their competitive pricing for all three P-10 pistol sizes F, C and S. They come with reversible mag release making them suitable for right-handers and southpaws...this from their site:

After several years of hard work, production of CZ pistols in in full swing at our Kansas City headquarters. Available in the full-size F, compact C and subcompact S, the P-10 family has grown greatly. Optic-Ready versions of each are available, as well as low-capacity versions of each variant.

For sights, US-made P-10s feature a single tritium lamp in the front with a large orange surround and a serrated black rear. Optics-Ready versions ship with a blank filler plate, and plates for both the Trijicon RMR and Leupold DeltaPoint Pro are available. Also available are matching sights that allow the user to co-witness their optic dot with the irons.

One change that happens on both the US-made and Czech-made P-10s is the switch to a swappable magazine release. With a change in geometry, the goal was to eliminate the stiffness some customers experienced as the magazine release broke in, even though it became smooth after some use. This new reversible release just requires a few minutes to swap, allowing the pistol to remain lefty-friendly.

These US-made P-10s retain all the features that have made them a resounding success — the crisp trigger, superior ergonomics and rugged reliability that set it apart from many in the striker-fired crowd.

H&K VP9-B with reversible push button mag release

11/1/2018

Picture
The VP9 finally gets a push button mag release and the letter "B" added to it's model number! Everything else is the same as the standard model and as follows:

In development for more than four years, the VP9 is Heckler & Koch’s latest handgun and the first striker fired HK since the renowned P7 series pistols were introduced in the 1980s.

Experience gained by HK engineers with the recent P30 pistol had a direct influence on the design of the VP9, but the VP9 breaks new ground with its integration of a unique striker firing system with an enhanced HK “light pull” trigger. The net result is trigger quality unequaled in any production striker fired handgun.

HK pioneered the first striker fired handguns, producing both the VP70 and P7 series, designs that impacted several models by HK competitors. But a superior trigger has eluded most striker fired pistol designs. The VP9 trigger surpasses those found on competitors. It has a short, light take-up with a solid, single action type break followed by a short positive reset.

The VP9 trigger has a consistent pre-travel pull with a positive wall/crisp break. Typically, striker fired guns have a pre-travel pull that increases in weight as you go through the trigger stroke. With the VP9, you have a less than noticeable pre-travel pull until the trigger reaches the engagement point of the fire control parts prior to trigger break.

The VP9 uses HK’s ergonomic handgun grip design that includes three changeable backstraps and six side panels— accommodating all hand sizes. Molded finger grooves in the front of the pistol’s grip also instinctively position an operator’s hand for optimal shooting. Only HK handguns have such a customized grip.

Although influenced by other HK models, the VP9 has all the hallmarks of the latest, state-of-the-art handgun. All controls are completely ambidextrous. Slide releases are present on both sides of the frame and the magazine release can be easily activated by left- or right-handed shooters.

A new feature is HK’s patented charging supports — simple components that are mounted on each side of the rear of the slide and provide better gripping leverage for racking the slide rearward. The charging supports speed reloading and make operating the VP9 easier for shooters with reduced hand strength. The VP pistols uses the proven P30 steel magazine; 15 and 10-round capacity available.

The VP9 has an extended Picatinny MIL-STD-1913 rail molded into its polymer frame for mounting lights and accessories. The rail has been tested and certified to handle mounted accessories up to 5.6 ounces.

The VP9’s proprietary captive flat recoil spring helps reduce the recoil forces effecting the operator and the handgun, improving shooter control during rapid firing and prolonging component service life.

HK’s famous cold hammer forged barrel — made from cannon grade steel — ensures long service life. Similar HK barrels on 9 mm P30 models have fired more than 90,000 rounds in endurance tests in 2010. The polygonal bore profile, with no traditional lands-and-grooves rifling, contributes to longer service life as well as a slight increase in muzzle velocity.

The VP9’s machined steel slide is protected from corrosion and wear by HK’s hostile environment finish and all metal components, including springs and pins have superior metallurgy.

VP pistols are made in Heckler & Koch’s Oberndorf factory in southwest Germany. The VP9 is well-suited for civilian sport shooting, security, military, and law enforcement use.

Covered by Heckler & Koch’s limited lifetime warranty, the HK VP9 is a solid design engineered with the famous long-term durability that make HK products especially cost-effective when subjected to total life cycle cost analysis.

New for 2018, the VP9-B offers a new US-style reversible push-button and utilizes the same magazines as the other VP9 Series. Depending on your shooting style, you can now choose between a European-style ambidextrous paddle mag release or the new US-style reversible button. This determination must be made at the time of purchase, as the two models are not convertible.

Previews and reviews on newly available items are written-up by our team as quickly as we can find them. Please let us know if we've missed something debuting on the market. As a firearm enthusiast or an AFD listed company you are welcome to submit a blog entry about a new product. You may also submit a firearm related commentary, idea or nostalgic musing: we like things celebratory of American ingenuity and manufacturing. All entries are subject to editing and/or fact-checking.
